Question
The stress-strain curves for four hypothetical metals are shown. 100 a) The most brittle metal is: (1) b) The stifest metal is: (1) c) The strongest metal is: (1) d) Find the elastic modulus for (2) 80 60 40 20 -metal B in 1000psi = 1 ksi. 0.02 0.03 Strain e (in /in.) (1) d) Find the percent elongation of metal D. (1) e) Find the yield strength of metal A. (2) f A tensile force of 28,000 lbf is applied to a bar with a cross-sectional area of 0.4 in2 made of metal A. What is the tensile stress? area 0.4 h) Will the sample plastically deform? Explain. (1)Explanation / Answer
a) The most brittle material is C. because there is no considerable deformation after elastic limit
b) Stiffness is the ability to resist deformation. For D the strain values are less among all other materials. So D is the stiffest material
c) D is the strongest material
d) Elastic modulus = stress/strain in elastic region.
So Elastic modulus = 40/0.008 = 5000 ksi
e) The yield strength of material A is about 90 ksi from the graph
f) Tensile stress = Tensile force / Area = 28000 / 0.4 = 70000 lbf/in2 = 70 ksi
h) 70 ksi is in elastic region for material A. So the sample will not deform plastically . It will undergo Elastic deformation.
