Explanation / Answer

In GT , the parts are identified and grouped to together. This is a major challenge because in an existing manufacturing system the parts maybe arranged on different criteria's and to change them all over again is difficult and time consuming. To overcome this challenge three methods are used: Visual inspection- arranging parts by looking at physical parts or photographs. Classification and coding - Based on characteristics attributes families are made. Another challenge is the identification of each product in the GT layout and this challenge is over come by surveying each component features and coding it properly. Challenge 3- Identical processing routes and different processing routes for parts whose basic geometries are different and parts whose basic geometries are similar respectively. The Production flow analysis by using manufacturing data can overcome both these challenges. The conditions under which FMS if recommended are: a) Proper scheduling is required and also process planning. b) Efficient machine utilization and proper maintenance on a timely basis. c) High capital investment and large maintenance budget. d) Many parts has similar design attributes in a manufacturing industry. e) The industry must support automation and also must have enough space.
