Question
Your firm has been asked to bid on a site investigation for a new onshore wind farm. The soil conditions are unknown, but the site is in an area that is regionally known for having mostly sandy soils, and based on some ponds located within the project limits, it is anticipated that groundwater may be an issue. You must provide your client with the soil’s strength characteristics, groundwater conditions, and electrical resistivity (for sizing underground wiring from towers to substation). You know you are competing against two other firms for the geotechnical work.
Based on the information given above, which tests would you recommend including in a preliminary subsurface investigation? You do not need to address frequency or location of tests at this point, only the types of test you would include. Explain your answer using evidence from the text (i.e. explain why you are selecting a certain method or procedure). You are welcome to use sources outside of assigned reading, in which case, be sure to include references.
Explanation / Answer
Soil mechanics is the back bone of the civil engineering .Without testing of the soil costruction is not possible because every structure requred foundation which base is soil
The following are the some soil test which would be recomended and added according to the question asked
A-PLATE LOAD TEST-Ths test is performed at the site to calculate the bearing capacity and the settlment of the soil .The test is conducted for both , clayey and sandy soil.
Why ??This test-Any type of the construction start with the foundation and if the foundation fails whole the structure failes so before starting the construction we must be aware that how much the settlement of the foundation will be there and what is the maximum load that can be bear by the soil without failing .This is the very basic thing which must be aquainted to the site executive if has to construct .
B-SOlL MOISTURE CONTENT TEST-There are several method to fined the percentage of the water in the soil such as Oven Dring Method ,Calcium Carbide Method,Torson Balance Method,Radiation Method,Alchohol Method,Pycnometer Method ,Sand Bath Method.Out of these Sand Bath method is not suitable for sandy soil and in the question given that the site is of sandy soil so except this methood we can adopt other according to our ease and availability of apparatus at site. This test determined the amount of water present in the soil.
Why?? This Test-By this test we know the percentage of the water present in the soil and accordingly we will decide that how much time it will take to dry then we can start there our activity .And if it will take much time then also affect the cast of the project that is why it would be an important test of soil that has to be done by consulting client.
C-WATER TABLE TEST-As in the question said that there are ponds also at the site it means knowing the water table at various locaton is neccessary .This test be perform by the digging bore hole by the Auger.this method also known as the HVORSLEV METHOD.
Why??This Test-This s the basic test performed and is must when pile foundation is in the design of construction .By this test if the structure goes below the water table then we know the no of pump required to drain out the water for ease and start of the constructon work .
the above written are some important test which can be added and also may be added some more but as a civil engineer we have to cast effective also
