Explanation / Answer
The source of outbreak of a new pathogen and its naturecan be determined in the following way: There are many infections affecting humans. The variousinfections are : 1.Respiratory 2.Urinary 3.Exanthematous[occurring on skin] 4.systemic 5.Enteric 6.STD To find out the source of the outbreak first we can takesamples from the infected patients: 1.Respiratory - sputum 2.Urinary - urine 3.Exanthematous -pus or blood from the pustules 4.Systemic - blood 5.Enteric - stools 6.STD - vaginal swabs or fluid from genital lesions. Next according to the disease we try to isolate the organismfrom the source of infection: 1.Respiratory -air sample 2.Urinary - water in wells, check for any faecalcontamination 3.Exanthematous - we cannot check anywhere because some ofthe systemic infections show their effects on the skin. 4.Systemic - any recent blood transfusion records of thepatients must be viewed. 5.Enteric - any food suspected to have the organisms causingthe infection. After eating that particular food if the persons havesuffered from diarrhoea and other enteric problems, we check forfood poisoning. 6.STD - any recent events of promiscuous sex. Then we compare the results from the patients to the resultsfrom the samples from various sources. We get the source. To find out the nature of the organism : 1.We find out whether it is bacteria or fungi. 2.we conduct Gram's staining.Find out whether Gram positive ornegative. 3.Identify the characteristics of the organism throughbiochemical tests. 4.Check to see whether it is a new organism. 5.If it is a new organism we conduct the antibioticsensitivity test to determine what antibiotics and in whatconcentration are lethal. 6.We can also observe the organism under electron microscopeand know its structure. 7.Basing on the above details we can manufacture a drug whichwill kill the organism. hope this helps.Related Questions
