Question
Hi,Ok so I followed the steps of this problem, which said "Anindestructible bullet 2.00 cm long is fired straight through aboard that is 10.0 cm thick. The bullet strikes the board with aspeed of 410 m/s and emergeswith a speed of 290 m/s. (Tosimplify, assume that the bullet accelerates only while the fronttip is in contact with the wood.)". My numbers are slightlydifferent from the problem on the website but I was able to findthe correct velocity which was -420000 and thickness of the boardto stop the bullet which was 20cm, but I keep getting the timewrong. I found the total time that the bullet is in contact withthe board to be 2.857e-4s but webassign said this was wrong. Can someone please help me solve for the correct time?

Explanation / Answer
you found the correct time: v=v0+at 290=410-420000*t1 t1=2.857E-4 the only thing wrong with it might be that you need to account forthe additional 2cm length of the bullet. since the bulletonly accelerates while the tip is in contact with the wood, thebullet travels the last 2cm at 290 m/s: x=vt .02=290*t2 t2=6.90E-5 so try t1+t2=3.55E-4 seconds
