Question

In a mall, a shopper rides up an escalator between floors. At thetop of the escalator, the shopper turns right and walks 6.50 m to astore. The magnitude of the shopper's displacement from the bottomof the escalator is 10.1 m. The vertical distance between thefloors is 5.00 m. At what angle is the escalator inclined above thehorizontal?

Once again I have drawn the picture but I don't get how thedimensions can make a right triangle because the walk to the storecreates another shape all together.....once I get the correctdrawing I can solve the problem....

Explanation / Answer

Total displacement   S = 10.1 m displacement at top of the escalarator s = 6.5 m So, displacement on escalarator s ' = [ S ^2 - s ^ 2 ]                                                        =7.73 m The vertical distance between the floors y = 5.00m Let the angle is the escalator inclined above thehorizontal be then sin = y / s '            = 40.3 degrees
