Question

Jules Verne in 1865 suggested sendingpeople to the Moon by firing a space capsule from a200m long cannon with a launch speedof 11.28 km/s. Whatwould have been the unrealistically large acceleration experiencedby the space travelers during launch?

The answer is _______ m/s2

Compare your answer with the free-fall acceleration 9.80m/s2.

The answer is ________xg

I don't understand how to do this problem. I already tried 3different calculations and came up with 2.74x104, 2.79x104, and 2.735x105for bothanswers because like I said I don't really know what I'mdoing. Any help would be greatlyappreciated.

Explanation / Answer

acceleration distance s = 200m, vi = 0 vf = 11.28 km/s = 11.28*1000 m/s let acceleration be a, we have: vf2 - vi2 =2as a = [(vf2-vi2]/2s= (11.28*1000 m/s)2 / (2*200m) = 318096 m/s2 this is hugh! compare with g, we have: 318096 m/s2 / 9.8m/s2 = 32458 or a = 32458 g it is unrelaistics since people can not stand for it. this is hugh! compare with g, we have: 318096 m/s2 / 9.8m/s2 = 32458 or a = 32458 g it is unrelaistics since people can not stand for it.
