If 89.2 % of the wood is submerged in water before the oil isadded, calculate the fraction submerged when oil with a density of824 kg/m3 covers the block I'm not sure how to begin the problem
Explanation / Answer
Initially, Mg = gV V is submerged volume and is density of fluid, for waterbeing 1000 kg/m3 So, M = dVo, d is density of wood and Vo is total volume. V = 0.892*Vo => d = 1000*0.892 kg/m3 = 892 kg/m3 Volumes submerged later be V1 and V2 in water and oil. So, 892*Vo*g = 1000V1*g + 824V2*g => V1 + 0.824*V2 = 0.892*Vo Also, since the oil covers the block, V1+V2 = Vo => 0.076*V2 = 0.008*Vo => V2/Vo = 0.008/0.076 = 0.10526 = 10.526% So, V1 = 89.474%
