Hi, can you please help me solve the following problem? It's notfrom a textbook, but we use the Giancoli Textbook as a resource.Thank you!Problem 2. Two photos aretaken of a moving car, one at t = 0 s and the other at t = 3 s.
In each case the shutter is open for 1 ms = 0.001 s. The photos ofthe car end up slightly
blurred, from which it is concluded that the car traveled 6 mm =0.006 m while the first
photo was being taken, and 18 mm = 0.018 m while the second photowas being taken.
Calculate the average acceleration of the car during thethree-second time interval between the shots, in a suitableapproximation.
Explanation / Answer
Assuming the car travelled perpendicular to the line of sight forboth photos, we can calculate the speed of the car when the photoswere taken: v(t=0) = 6 mm / 1 ms = 6 m/s v(t=3) = 18 mm / 1 ms = 18 m/s Acceleration is change of velocity over time, i.e. a= (v(t=3) - v(t=0)) / (3s-0s) = (18 m/s - 6 m/s) / 3s = 4m/s^2 This is the *average* acceleration during these 3 seconds, as wedon't know whether the acceleration was constant or variable duringthat time interval.
