Question

A vehicle with a mass of 1000kg is going east at a velocity of 30m/s.
It collides with another vehicle of the same mass and is deflected35 degrees north of its original course. The second vehicle's finalpath is 90 degrees to the right of the final path of the firstvehicle..
a) What's the momentum of the 1st vehicle after the collision?
b) What's the momentum of the 2nd vehicle after thecollision?
c) What's the velocity of the 1st vehicle after collision?
d) What's the velocity of the 2nd vehicle after collision?

Explanation / Answer

mass m = 1000 kg Initial speed of 1 st vehicle u = 30 m / s Initial velocity of 2 nd vehicle U = 0 m /s In east direction : ----------------- from law of conservation of momentum , m u + m U = m v cos 35 + M V cos55               30= 0.8191 v + 0.5735V              ---------------( 1) In north direction : ----------------- apply law of conservation of momentum ,     0 = m v sin 35 - m V sin55   v sin 35 = V sin 55            V= 0.7 v     ----------( 2) substitue eq ( 2 ) in eq ( 1 ) we get 30= 0.819 v + 0.5735 * 0.7 v from this v = 24.57 m / s So, V = 0.7 v = 17.2 m / s (a). the momentum of the first vehicle after the crash = mv                                                                               = 24570 kg m / s
b) the momentum of the 2nd vehicle after the crash = m V                                                                            = 17200 kg m / s
c) the velocity of the 1st vehicle after the crash = 24.57 m /s
d) velocity of the 2nd vehicle after the crash = 17.2 m /s
