Question

A spring has a spring constant of 578 N/m When usedto suspend an object in air, the spring stretches by 0.0640 m. Whenused to suspend the same object in water, the spring stretchesby 0.0520 m What buoyant force acts on theobject? what is the volume of the part fo the object that isunderwater? need help, thanks A spring has a spring constant of 578 N/m When usedto suspend an object in air, the spring stretches by 0.0640 m. Explanation / Answer

I think you cut off the first part of the problem. Please readthe beginning of the problem carefully and correct the post. Thensend me a private message to let me know it's fixed, and I'll takecare of it for you. All right... force of the spring is   kx    where x is the stretch. The idea isthat the buoyant force is the difference in the force exerted bythe spring, or: .     buoyant force = kx = 578 N/m * (0.0640 -0.0520)m =    6.936 Newtons . Volume of object under water is equal to the volume of thewater displaced. Also, the buoyant force is equal to the weight ofthe water displaced, so: .         B = weight of water displaced = density of water * g * volume displaced .     volume displaced =   B / g = 6.936 / 1000 * 9.8 =   0.0007078m3   is the volume of water displaced and alsothe volume of the object underwater
