Question

I am working from Physics (7th) by Cutnell, Johnson, Chapter3, Problem 47P. The swimmer's velocity is 1.4 m/s. All Okay. Thesolution shows the swimmers crossing the 2800 m river (2800/1.4)giving a time of 2000 second to cross. This does not seem correctas the current of 0.91 m/s would cause the swimmer to a longerdistance to cross the river based on the current, which means theswims the hypotenuse of the triangle, a distance greater than 2800m. Can you please expail this? I am working from Physics (7th) by Cutnell, Johnson, Chapter3, Problem 47P. The swimmer's velocity is 1.4 m/s. All Okay. Explanation / Answer

The swimmer's velocity is 1.4 m/s. All Okay. The solutionshows the swimmers crossing the 2800 m river (2800/1.4) giving atime of 2000 second to cross. This does not seem correct as thecurrent of 0.91 m/s would cause the swimmer to a longer distance tocross the river based on the current, which means the swims thehypotenuse of the triangle, a distance greater than 2800 m. Can you please explain this?
when the swimmer is crossing the river along the widthwhich is 2800m ,at the end of the journey he was dragged to somedistance which is not exactly opposite to the initial point ofstart.
hence it seems as if he swims a hypotenuse but while solvingthe problem we can take that the distance equal to 2800m.
