Question
How can microscopic protists and fungi be characterized? Different type of protists moves in different ways. Describe how one of the protists you observed moves? Why are so many other living things dependent on plantlike protists? Which organisms could not move? Why? Which of the protists you observed had both plantlike and animal-like characteristics? Why? Explain why algae are plantlike. Locomotion is generally a characteristic of animals. However, some plantlike protists move about by means of flagella. What is the adaptive advantage of a photosynthetic organism that is able to move from place to place? How do the fungi you identified obtain food? How are fungi important to the environment? lf an imperfect fungus were found to produce spores in sexual reproduction, What would you need to look at to reclassify the fungus?Explanation / Answer
Microscopic protists and fungi can be characterised in the following way:
Protists :
Fungi:
Question :1 One of the protists known as amoeba moves by making extensions in all directions through the help of its locomotory organelle known as pseudopodia.
Question :2 Plant like protists are mainly autotrophic and they contain chlorophyll to make their own food i.e carbohydrates through photosynthesis. This carbohydrate serves as source of food for many living organisms. Also, through this process, a lot of oxygen is released to the atmosphere that serves for respiration in living organisms. This is the reason why living things are dependent on plant like protists.
Question :3 Some parasitic protists and fungus could not move as they reside inside the host system and get readily avaiable food fom the host.
Question 4: Euglena is the protist that had both plant like and animal like characteristics. This is because as a plant , it has chlorophyll and it is an autotroph that can prepare its own food via photosynthesis and like animals it is heterotroph and can feed on other organisms for food.
Question 5:Algae are plant like because they contain chlorophyll like plant and thus can prepare their own food through photosynthesis.
Question 6:The advantage is that it helps them move fast in water in search of prey as their food when they do not synthesise their own food by photosynthesis.
Question 7:Fungi such as saprophytes obtain their food from dead and decayed matter of plants and animals while fungus that are parasites obtain their food directly from the host blood or from their intestine in which they reside.
Question 8: Fungi are important to the environment in a way that they act as nature's recyclers by decomposing deacyed organic matter and wates and returing them to soil thus increasing the nutrient content of the soil. This helps to remove decayed wastes from the environment.
Question :9 We would look at the structure of the fungus that produces the spore:If the spores are seen to be formed in cases that are round in shape found at the tip of the body of fungus, we can classify it as zygote fungus. If the spore is produced in an sac called ascus ,we can classify it as sac fungus .If the spore is produced in a club shaped structure,we can classify it as club fungus.
