Question

Intense white light is incident on a diffraction grating thathas 650 lines/mm. (a) What is the highest order in which the complete visiblespectrum can be seen with this grating? (Enter 1 for first order, 2for second order, etc.)

(b) What is the angular separation between the violet edge (400 nm)and the red edge (700 nm) of the first order spectrum produced bythe grating?

Explanation / Answer

we have diffraction grating has 650 lines / mm therefore the slit spacing is d = 1/650 lines/mm                                            = 1.538*10-6m a) the condition for mth order maximum in diffractiongrating is dsin = m for highest order in the visible spectrum , we take thelongest wavelength in the visible spectrum i.e = 700nm so mmax = dsin /       (= 90 for maximumorder)                 = 1.538*10-6m*1 /700*10-9m                   = 2.19 so therefore the maximum orders that can be observed is2 b) for first order maximum , we have the conditionas           dsin =    the angular seperation for the voilet light isV =sin-1(V/d)              (given V = 400*10-9m)                                                                        = ----------- the angular seperation for the red light isR =sin-1(R/d)              (given R = 700*10-9m)                                                                        = ----------- so the angular seperation between the voilet & red lightis                      = R - V                           = -----------                                                                        = ----------- so the angular seperation between the voilet & red lightis                      = R - V                           = -----------
