in both the cases the force exerted by the man onthe boy is equal to the force exerted by the boy on the man . but in case (a ) the force is less than the frictionalforce exerted on the boy as well as on the man so they are notmoving . and in case (b) the force is greater than thefrictional force on the boy and less than the frictionalforce on the man . so the boy only is sliding .
