Question

A heat pump has a coefficient of performance of 3.80 andoperates with a power consumption of 7.03 kW. How much energy does a heat pump deliver into a home during 8hrs of continous operation? How much heat does a heat pump extract from the atmosphereduring those 8 hours? A heat pump has a coefficient of performance of 3.80 andoperates with a power consumption of 7.03 kW. How much energy does a heat pump deliver into a home during 8hrs of continous operation? How much heat does a heat pump extract from the atmosphereduring those 8 hours?

Explanation / Answer

There are two things you need to know: .     power consumed + heat in = heat expelled to home . and          heatexpelled to home = COP * power consumed . Also, 7.03 kW is    7030 Joules persecond. . So now: . in 8 hours, energy consumed = 8 *3600 * 7030 = 2.02464 x 108 Joules . energy delivered to home = 3.80 * 2.02464 x108=   7.694 x108 Joules . energy extracted from atmosphere = 7.694 -2.02464 = 5.669x 108 Joules
