Question

A plane flies with a constant speed of 120 km/h relative toair, and makes instantaneous turns, when necessary.
The plane follows a perfectly square path on the ground, usingnorth-seath and east-west roads as a guide for each of the 60kmsides. On a day when there is a steady 60km/h wind blowing diagnollyacross the square from the NW, how long does the trip take? Please show steps! Thanks :) On a day when there is a steady 60km/h wind blowing diagnollyacross the square from the NW, how long does the trip take? Please show steps! Thanks :)

Explanation / Answer

Ignore this part if you just want the answer. Seperate the wind into a horizontal and a vertical component. Whenthe plain goes from N>S, the vertical component assists it,making it go faster. On the other hand, when it comes back(S>N), the wind REsists the plan in the exact same way, so thetime lost is effectively worthless. The same thing happenswhen travelling east to west / west to east. So, essentially, you can just ignore the wind for this problem, since you're going in a square and you'll be exposed to the windfor an equal distance on each side. Answer: The trip will take 2 hours, since you're travelling a total of 240km, at an average speed of 120 km/h.
