Question
The electric field at the point x = 6.00 cm and y = 0 points in the positivex direction with a magnitude of 6.00 N/C. At the point x = 20.0 cm and y = 0 the electric fieldpoints in the positive x direction with a magnitude of15.0 N/C. Assume that this electricfield is produced by a single, point charge. (a) Find the location of the point charge.(x, y) = _____ cm
(b) Find the sign and magnitude of its charge.
(a) Find the location of the point charge.
(x, y) = _____ cm
(b) Find the sign and magnitude of its charge.
Explanation / Answer
for each of the electric fields that are described. So, for the first one: 6.00 N/C = kq/(x-0.06)2 Use the same concept for the second equation.
Then, set both equations equal to q, and set those two equalto each other. Then, solve for X. The X is your Xcoordinate. The Y coordinate is simply 0, as it is unchangedfor each field.
To find the magnitude of the charge, simply insert the x backin to one of the equations and solve for q. Notice, though, that q should be negative in this case.
