Question

Hello, please I need a step-by-step procedure to plot the Mohr's circles on excel

Table 2. Data from unconsolidated-undrained triaxial tests on compacted "Sawtooth Clay." Test dimensions: specimen diameter 1.5 inches, initial specimen height-3.0 inches Specinen trimmed from compaction sample UU Test # Confining Pressure Sl 15.0 30.0 45.0 15.0 30.0 45.0 15.0 30.0 45.0 15.0 30.0 45.0 15.0 30.0 45.0 Stress Difference at Failure (psi) 99.3 131.9 159.3 129.8 148.3 161.0 114.7 127.7 135.7 65.9 73.6 78.5 35.6 39.2 41.3 4 10 12 13 15

Explanation / Answer

Inorder to plot Mohr's circles on Excel amongst various ways creating XY scatter chart from values of X and Y where X is values of normal stress and Y are values of corresponding shear stress values.

Chart can be created as follows :

Start by inserting a blank XY Scatter chart (Scatter with smooth lines).

Next, add the series representing the circle: select the chart, then Chart Tools contextual ribbon then Design tab then select Data button. In the resulting Select Data Source dialog box, click the Add button. In the resulting Edit Series dialog box, in the Series X values enter =Sheet1!_C1Xs and in the Series Y values enter =Sheet1!_C1Ys.

Now for the above case we have UU test and for sample A

Minor principal stress= confining pressure=15 psi

Major principal stress = confining pressure+stress difference at failure= 114.3 psi

Thus we have two sets of X and corresponding Y values for sample 1 of specimen A and these are :

X1=15;Y1=0

X2= 114.3; Y2=0

now radius of circle = (114.3-15)/2= 99.3/2=49.65

Center of circle = (114.3+15)/2=129.3/2=64.65

Thus other two point sets

X3=64.65; Y3= 49.65

X4= 64.65; Y4= -49.65

As explained in procedure above enter these values of X and Y in tabular form and then for series X select column of 4 X values as obtained and for series Y select column of 4 Y values as obtained.

Same procedure can be easily used to plot Mohr's circles for sample 2&3 of specimen A and all other specimens as given in table in question.
