Question
Determine the initial direction of the deflection of charged particles as they enter the magnetic fields, as shown in the figure below.
Figure a ---Select--- up down to the right to the left into the page out of the page no deflection Figure b ---Select--- up down to the right to the left into the page out of the page no deflection Figure c ---Select--- up down to the right to the left into the page out of the page no deflection Figure d ---Select--- up down to the right to the left into the page out of the page no deflection Bin x xXX up ? x xXX t 45 45° Bright ?Explanation / Answer
a) The magnetic field is into the plane of paper and force is in direction of the movement of the particle, i.e towards right. Now using the Fleming's right hand rule, we can find that the direction of deflection of charged particle is upwards.
b) For the negatively charged particle we use left hand rule, the force on particle is towards left and magnetic field is moving upwards, so the direction of deflection will be out of the page.
c) In this case there will be no deflection as the particle is moving anti-parallel to the magnetic field.
d) In this case using the right hand rule, direction is found as to be into the page.
