TO determine the depth, D, ofthe well you drop a rock from the top of the well and listem for the splash as the rock hits the water's surface. The sound of the splash arrivesr 3.4 s after you drop the rock. The speed of sound in the well is v,345m's Ctheexpertta.com 50% Part (a) Enter the quadratic equation for the distance, D, in terms of the time the acceleration due to gravity, and the speed of sound. Arrange the expeession so that the coefficient of the D2 term is 1. a)The quadratic eqn will be:
(1/v)^2 D^2 - (2t/v + 2/g) D + t^2 = 0
(1/345)^2 D^2 - (2 x 3.4/345 + 2/9.81) D + 3.4^2 = 0
0 = (8.4 x 10^-6) D^2 - (0.22) D + 11.56
b)solving the above quadratic eqn we get
D = 52.65 m ; 26137 m (ignoring the bigger value, as its exceptionally high)
Hence, D = 52.65 m
