a) initial momentum is zero

pi = 0

final momentum is pf = m1v1+m2v2+m3v3

pf = m1(-18j)+m2(-18i)+m3v3

here m1 = m2

m3 = 2m1

pf = -m1(18i+18j)+2m1*v3

from conservation of momentum

pi = pf

-m1(18i+18j)+2m1*v3 = 0

2m1v3 = m1(18i+18j)

v3 = 9i+9j

speed of the third peice

v3 = sqrt(9^2+9^2) = 12.73 m/s

b) direction = tan^-1(9/9) = 45 degrees north of east.
