Question
Problem 1. Estimate how long it would take an air parcel to circle the globe if it travelled at the mean speed of the subtropical jet. Problem 2. Consider the schematic of the Hadley circulation in Fig. 3. Deep clouds form near the equator, with shallow clouds being dominant in the subtropics. High and low clouds have different effects on the energy budget. How would these differences affect the Hadley circulation? Would they tend to strengthen the Hadley circulation of weaken it? What assumptions do you need to make to decide? HADLEY GaRCULATION CLOUD CLUSTERS OPEN CELLS CLOSED CLOUD BANDS CELLS STRATOCUMULUS EQ STRATUS Fig. 3Explanation / Answer
Q.1
Average speed of subtropical jet = 177 kph
Peripheral of globe =2?R
R is radius of Earth. R = 6400 km
Peripheral = 2*?*6400 = 40212.386 km
Time taken to perform one revolution = 40212.386/177 hr
= 227.19 hr
Q.2
Hadley circulation is air circulation in atmosphere from equator to poleward.
It is due to pressure difference created by temperature variation.
At equator temperature is high so energy of air is also high, when energy difference (temperature difference) increases , it will strengthen the Hadley circulation.
We need to assume there is no effect of rotation and other environmental factor .
