To determine the direction of force, all we need to apply is Fleming's left hand rule as shown below
a)
Dots represent field coming outside the page.
If we hold our left hand as shown, then rotate it such a way that index finger (Magnetic field) is towards us, middle finger (current) towards right, thumb will point downwards. Hence force is acting downwards.
b)
As conventional current flows opposite to electron current, both the diagrams are actually, same. Hence, force in second case will also be downwards.
