If the iron is on top of the wood or beneath it, the weight of theiron and wood, and the total buoyant force don't change. So when the iron is on top, the wood needs to displace a certainamount of water with a weight equal to the iron and wood When the iron is suspended underwater, it's already displacing somewater, which means the wood doesn't need to displace as much. Therefore, the wood floats higher.
