A small rubber wheel is used to drive a large pottery wheel. the two wheels are mounted so that their circular edgestouch. the small wheel has a radius of 2.0cm and acceleratesat the rate of 7.2 rad/secsquared, and it is in contact with thepottery wheel (radius 21.0cm) without slipping. calculate theangular acceleration of the pottery wheel, and the time it takesthe pottery wheel to reach its required speed of 65 rpm.

Explanation / Answer

a)   If there is no slipping, the lineartangential acceleration of the pottery wheel and the rubber

           wheel at the contact point must be the same

                 atan= R1a1 =R2a2

                 (2.0 cm)(7.2 rad/s2) = (25.0 cm)a2 , which givesa2 =       0.58rad/s2.

      (b)We find the timefrom

                 w = w0 + at

                 (65 rev/min)(2p rad/rev)/(60 s/min) = 0 + (0.58rad/s2)t, which gives t=        12 s.
