Question

Two figure skaters, one weighing 625 N and the other 725 N, pushoff against each other on frictionless ice. (a) If theheavier skater travels at 1.50 m/s, how fast will the lighter onetravel?
I got that it travels -1.74 m/s because initial momentum =final momentum,
but I need help with b: How much kinetic energy is "created" duringthe skaters' maneuver, and where does this energy come from?

Using the equation Kinetic Energy= (1/2) m v ^2 I got that thelighter one travels 96.9 J and the heavier one travels 105.8 J. andif you add them up its 9.2J because the lighter one is in thenegative direction

Is that right? and where does this energy come from???

help :(

Explanation / Answer

Yes, thank you. But wouldn't the kinetic energy for thelighter skater be in the negative direction, so it would be-96.9+105.8J= 9.2 J ? Also, where does this energy come from?
