Question

I am having some problem with this physics problem in my homework. It is from Physics (8th) Cutnell. Chapter 10, problem 6.Thanks!
It reads as follows

-A spring lies on a horizontal table, and the left end of thespring is attached to a wall. The other end is connected to a box.The box is pulled to the right, stretching the spring. Staticfriction exists between the box and the table, so when the springis stretched only by a small amount and the box is released, thebox does not move. The mass of the box is 0.70 kg, and the springhas a spring constant of 52 N/m. The coefficient of static frictionbetween the box and the table on which it rests iss = 0.80. How far can the spring bestretched from its unstrained position without the box moving whenit is released?

Explanation / Answer

Given that the mass of box is m = 0.70 kg    spring constant is k = 52 N/m       The coefficient of static friction between the box andthe table on which it rests is s =0.80 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------            If the box not moving in stretchedposition , static frictional force opposes springforce                                       s*mg = k*x                                                x = s*mg / k                                                   = 0.105 m          = 10.5cm
