The velocity has 2 components: horizontal and vertical Vertical velocity = 40 m/s *Sin 40 = 25.7m/s In y direction we will use the most general equation ofmotion: yf=yo+Voy*t+1/2*a*t2 where yf =24, yo=0 (for simplicity) ,a=-9.8 Rewrite it again: 24 = 25.7t -4.9t2 Putting everything to on side: 4.9t2-25.7t+24 =0 This a 2nd order equation, so solve it use the formula:t1= (-b + (b2-4ac))/(2a) and t2=(-b - (b2-4ac))/(2a) where a=4.9, b= -25.7, c= 24 this gives you t=1.22 and t=4.03 I hope this helps.
