Question
One afternoon, Aldan (3 years old) was playing in his tree house. While running his fingers along the rolling, he suddenly yelled snatching his hand back off the rally. When he looked down he saw a small sliver of wood sticking out of his middle finger. the splinter but his finger wasn't bleeding. What primary layer or layers of the cutaneous membrane has the splinter gone through? Epidermis only Dermis Only Both epidermis and dermis Stratum Basale only If the splinter want into Aldan's arm instead of his linger Which of these layers would the splinter NOT have placed? Stratum carenum Stratum Granulosum Stratum spinous Stratum Ludlum This puncture has broken Aldan's intact skin barrel and now may allow bacteria or other pathogens to enter. What cells will help identify these pathogens for destruction? Keratinocytes Melanocytes dendritic cells (Langerhans cells) Lamellar (Pacinian) corpusclesExplanation / Answer
1) a- Epidermis only: Epidermis is the primary layer of the cutaneous membrane has the splinter gone through because as we seen absence of bleeding. According to dermatology any damage occurred to the skin no deeper than the epidermis, it wont get bleed.
2) c- Stratum spinosum: Epidermis includes different layers first layer is stratum corneum, second layer is stratum lucidum, third layer is stratum granulosum, fourth layer is stratum spinosum and next layer is stratum basale. The option you gave didn't contain stratum basale so stratum spinosum is the deepest layer among the three layers so it won't get pierced.
3) a- keratinocytes: Keratinocytes produe the most important protein of the epidermis. The protein is appropriately called keratin. Keratinocytes also modulate the immune system. The primary function is the formation of barrier against environmental damage by pathogenic bacteria, fungi, heat, water loss. The keratin makes skin tough and provides us with much needed protection from micro organisms, physical harm and chemical irritation.
