Question

A turning operation uses a cutting speed = 280 m/min, feed = 0.125 mm/rev, and depth of cut = 4.50 mm. The thermal diffusivity of the work material = 60 mm2 /s and the volumetric specific heat = 3.5 x 103 J/mm3 ·°C. If the temperature increase above ambient temperature (i.e. DeltaT) is measured by a toolchip thermocouple to be 925°C.

(a) Calculate the specific energy for the work material in this operation.

(b) Using Table 20.2, determine what type of work material is most likely used in this operation.

Explanation / Answer

(a) Specific Energy = volumetric specific heat * change in temp.

                              = 3.5 * 10^-3 * 925    = 3.3275 J/mm^3     or 3327.5 * 10^6 J /m^3

(b) for 3.3275 J/mm^3 of specific energy , Work material is Alloy Steels 301-320
