Question

Given two function of mitotic cell division in multicellular organisms. What is the function of meiosis? Before cell division can occur, what must the cell duplicate? What cycle does the cell spend 90% of its time in? What is the "most important" event of interphase and when does it occur? You are a researcher foe a drug company and want to find a cure for cancer. When type of compounds (that may be made into drugs) in plants and animals will you look for to help curve cancer? List, in order, the 4 stages of mitosis. Chromosome movement during mitosis depends on what part of the cell? What happens during cytokinesis, the final stage of cell division? Describe how cytokinesis is different in plant cells and animal cells. How do malignant tumors differ from benign tumors? List the three ways cell division is controlled in organisms

Explanation / Answer

1) Two major function of mitosis are: - It is responsible for development of body as it causes somatic cell division.

- It is responsible for compensating damaged cell in an organism.

Function of meiosis include: - It has major role in development of sex cell such as sperm cell, ova, pollen grain etc.

2) Before cell division there is duplication of DNA, cell organelle, core protein etc.

3) Before cell undergo division it is in resting phase which is actually an intense metabolic stage before cell division ,this stage is called Interphase.

4) During interphase most important event is replication of DNA,which is preceded and followed by gaps.

5) Plant secrete many compounds which are anticancerous including: pigments,Lycopene etc. I would formulate drug by using such compounds, reason being at check points the controll mechanism need to work .From animal cdk-Enzyme can be used to function correctly at check points to controll the cell division, and not allowing cell to undergo uncontrolled division.

6) Four stages of mitosis are: (1) PROPHASE (2) METAPHASE (3) ANAPHASE (4) TELOPHASE

7) Chromosome movement also called walking chromosome or jumping genes depens on certain genes present on parts of chromosome. They were first discovered by Barbara and Mc.Lintock in maize.

8) Cytokinesis is the final stage of cell division where cell cyotoplasm divides cell into two. This takes place in two ways:

9) (1) in case of Plants cytokinesis takes place by formation of phragmoplast (2) In case of animal cytokinesis takes palce by formation of furrow which involve actin filament.

10) Malignent tumor are cancer causing tumor whereas benign tumor are non cancerous tumor.Malignent tumor has property of metastasis where as such property is not observed by benign tumor.

11) In cell cycle there are two check points ,which are enzymatically controlled to allow cell undergo controlled cell divison .These check points are : (1) Check point between G1 and S phase (2) Check point between G2 and M-phase. Howard and Pelc gave us idea about :G1, S, G2 and M-phase.
