Question
A municipal WWT system for a community is being upgraded from primary treatment to secondary treatment to meet the effluent standards of 25 mg/L (TSS) and 25 mg/L (B0Ds). In order to meet the total BODs effluent standard, the effluent soluble BODs must be 15 mg/L Given the following pilot study kinetic parameters and operational parameters: Primary effluent characteristics: Flow = 12,960 m3/d; BODs = 100 mg/L SRT-6 d%, = 100 mg/L ; Hm-2.5 d-1, kd = 0.05 d-1; Y-065 mg VSS/mg BODs ; MLVss-2000 mg/L Determine the required volume of the aeration basin.Explanation / Answer
Given data;
Influent BOD5= S0=100mg/L;
Effluent BOD5=S=15mg/L;
Flow rate Q=12960 m3/d;
Kd=0.05/day;
Y=0.65;
SRT=6 days:
MLVSS =X=2000mg/L;
Therefore,volume of aeration tank V is :
V=(Q*SRT*Y*(S0-S))/(X*(1+Kd*SRT));
By substituting all above values in above equation, we will get
Volume of aeration tank V=1652.4 cubic meters.
