Question
2. Technical report: A thorough and detailed site investigation is an essential before the design and construction of any civil engineering project. Soil exploration is one of the important stages in any site investigation. Students are required to write an essay about soil exploration by discussing the following: a) The aim and the objectives of site investigation with reference to any international standard engineering code. b) The importance of soil exploration and its contribution to the cost and safety of any construction project c) Scope/stages of soil exploration programme. d) In-situ and laboratory soil testing used and their application and limitations. e) Methods of recording and presenting the outcomes of soil exploration.Explanation / Answer
a) Aim and objectives of site investigation:
b) Importance of soil exploration:
1. Soil has variety of properties which will differ from place to place. Like black cotton soils will under go large amount of swelling and shrinkage if we didn't undergo soil exploration it will create major problem in future.
2. If the foundation not set on the solid ground it will have distract impact on the structure because foundation is the integral part of any construction.
c) Stages of soil exploration program:
(i) Reconnaissance study:
(a) Geological data
(b) Serial photographs
(C) Pedological data
(ii) Detailed investigation:
(a) Boring
(b) Sampling
(c) Testing
(i) Lab test
(ii) Field test
(d) Aerial photographs
(e) Geophysical methods
(iii) Performance study
(a) Further testing
(b) Instrumentation
(c) Performance
d) insitu and laboratory soil tests:
In site tests - static cone penetration test and dynamic cone penetration test.
Laboratory tests include compaction test, California bearing ratio test, atterberg limit test and unconfined compression test.
