Problem 5 (20 points) Why real continuous reactors do not behave as ideal reactors? (d points) 2. What are the advantages of batch reactors? (2 points) 3. Draw a flow diagram of a water-softening plant and indicate the functions of each points) 4. What are the important properties that a coagulant should have? (3 points) 5. Discuss the different types of sedimentation Cypes 1, and 11) (3 points) 6. Draw a cross-sectional diagram of a rapid sand filter (2 points) 7. What are the important properties that a disinfectant must have? (2 poiats) 8. Discuss the factors that affect the effectiveness of chlorine (4 points)Explanation / Answer
1.) Continuous reactors do not behave as ideal reactors because of density differences due to temperature or other causes, short circuiting because of uneven inlet or outlet conditions, local turbulence or dead spots in the tank corners. the detentin time in the real tanks is generally less than the theoretical detention time.
2.)advantages of batch reactors are
high conversion per unit volume of one pass
flexibility of operation same reactor can produce one product one time and different product the next
easy to clean
operation cost is reduced for multiple products but if only ine product is required operation cost increases
