Question

Perform a concrete mix design calculation using the parameters assigned to your group in the handout provided. In the end, you must have the quantities for all the ingredients to be used in the mix. I am in group 3, thanks. Explanation / Answer

the design mix preparation has a number of steps to be followed ,

GRADE DESIGNATION GIVEN : M25

step 1 : We have to calculate the target mean strength ,

according to the details given for group 3

TARGET MEAN STRENGTH = fck + 1.65 s

= 25 + 1.65 (4)

=31.6 MPa (Approx)

step 2 : we have to select WATER CEMENT RATIO : Let us assume water cement ratio to 0.50

step 3 : Calculation of water content

for the given size of aggregates (19mm) according to IS CODE water content is 186kg/m3 ( If plastcizer is used we can reduce by 20 % ) = 186 x 0.8 = 148.8 kg/m3

step 4 : We have to calculate cement content

Water cement ratio is 0.5

water content = 148.8 kg/m3

CEMENT CONTENT = 148.8 / 0.5 = 297.6 kg/m3 = 298 kg/m3 approx = 18.6 lb/ft3

step 5 : calculation of fine and coarse aggregate

volume of cement = 298/3.15x 1000 = 0.094m3 = 3.31 ft 3

volume of water = 148.8 / 1000 = 0.149 m3 = 5.26 ft 3

total weight = 0.094 + 0.149 = 0.243 m3 =8.58 ft 3

volume of fine and coarse aggregate = 1- 0.243 = 0.757 m3

VOLUME OF FINE AGGREGATE (F.A) = 0.757 X .33 = 0.25 m3 = 8.82 ft 3

VOLUME OF COARSE AGGEGRATE (C.A) = 0.757- 0.25 = 0.5 m3 = 17.65 ft 3

WEIGHT OF F.A = 0.25 X G X 1000 = 0.25 X 2.64X1000= 660 Kg/m3 = 41.20 lb/ft3

weight of C.A = 0.5X G COARSE X 1000 = 1290 Kg/m3  =80.53 lb/ft3

CALCULATION OF QUANTITIES material volume (ft3) calculated weight (lb) weight corrected for moisture( lb) WATER 5.26 9.28 CEMENT 3.31 18.6 FLYASH - - CA 17.65 80.53 AIR FA 8.82 41.20 CONCRETE MIX 1.0
