Blast Resistant Structure is a structure that can sustain even the harshest conditions. It is mainly developed due to following reasons -
(1). If the structure is important one and need to be preserved. For eg - Nuclear power plant, Army Weapon base.
(2). If people of national importance are in a building For eg-President, Parliament or Prime Minister's office.
(3). To protect people from hazards if a blast occurs. For eg- A blast in a Nuclear power plant can cause radiation , Blast in a dam can cause floods etc.
(4). A place having secret information stored related to national importance.
Blast can mainly happen by 2 ways-
(1). Internal blast - Due to chamical reactions or Radioactivity.
(2). External blast - Due to terrorist activities, or war between the country or people.
Blast Resistant Structure are basically designed to withstand the blast and it's effects. Some of the points taken into consideration while designing building are as follows-
A stand off distance should be provided between the building and outer space . It should be created by Billboards, trees, Street furniture. In case of a blast from a vehicle this can prevent it from damage.
Gas, water , electricity supply should not be located on outer part of the building or at ceiling or roof. As they will be the one to explode in case of external blast.
The building should be made more and more of Reinforced Concrete instead of Glass or steel which makes it appearence beautiful.
Dome shape building is the most safest of all structures.
The structure should be designed ductile, as britlle structure would collapse immediately.
