Question

In order to gain a better physical understanding of the magnitude of specified loads on buildings, evaluate the pressure load on the floor due the weight of all your team members distributed on a surface of 1 square meter. Relate this value to the live loads specified for use and occupancy according to NBCC 2015 (Division B Part 4 Table 4.1.5.3). Comment on your results. Is the Building Code overly conservative in your opinion? Discuss briefly. [use any arbitrary weight value for calculation of the answer]

Explanation / Answer

In an area of 1m2, a maximum of 4 persons can be accomodated. Considering average mass of 1 person as 60kg,total weight on 1m2 = 4*60*9.8=2352 N = 2.352 kN

Therefore ,load intensity = 2.352 kN/m2

This can be compared with the loads given in NBCC 2015 (Division B Part 4 Table 4.1.5.3)
