5.42 An engineer has the responsibility to ensure that the products he designs are safe for use but safe usage also requires the co-operation of the user.A design engineer not only develops new products,but are also concerned with their safety,efficiency and cost.If a cell phone suddenly explodes or stops working properly,maybe the user could state that there was fault in the design.But if the user meets with an accident while speaking on a mobile while driving,it is definitely his own fault and not the engineer's.Everyone knows that using mobile phones while driving is not safe and even then if someone resorts to it,he/she iss doing it at risk.It is as dangerous as drinking and driving.Can the maker of alcohol be blamed for it and not the driver?It was the driver's choice afterall despite knowing the consequences.

a) A good option is to silence the phone while driving so that text messages and calls may not distract the driver.
b) Try to avoid looking at the screen while driving.Some cars have voice-activated systems or the driver can use a headset to speak.
c) Drivers should avoid attending calls at dangerous curves or in the middle of heavy rains and/or traffic.
d) Always try to stop the vehicle and then talk on phone if its urgent.
5.44 The safety benefits of cel phone usage in automobiles are that users can make calls to report crimes,disabled vehicles,accidents,medical emergencies,unexpected and dangerous road conditions,location tracing etc.But if drivers are distracted,traffic safety gets affected posing potential danger to the life of others travelling on the road also.The user should be aware of the merits and de-merits and take appropriate decision.
5.45 I do not text while driving as it is very distracting.The average time distraction is caused by texting is 5 seconds.In a vehicle travelling at 55 miles/hr,the driver will be driving the length of a football field looking at his mobile.Texting while driving has resulted in a number of accidents.Hence,it is too risky.Life is far more important than a text message.
