Question
4. You are calculating earthwork that will be required on a highway construction project. Overall, you calculate that the project will include 65,500 yd3 of cut and 71,590 yd3 of fill. The shrinkage factor for the soils located within the project limits is 15%. The shrinkage factor for borrow excavation (soil obtained from offsite) will be 14%. What volume of borrow excavation will be required to complete the project? (Please show your calculations.)
5. The cross-section at STA 20 + 00 shows 311 ft2 of fill and 129 ft2 of cut. The cross section at STA 20 + 50 shows 234 ft2 of fill and 185 ft2 of cut. • How much volume of fill will the contractor be required to construct between those two stations? • How much volume of cut will the contractor be required to excavate between those two stations?
Explanation / Answer
Hi,
Plz give thumbs up.
Plz post if any difficulties.
THanks.
Vol. of Cut considering shrinkage = 65500 * (1-0.15) = 55675 yd3
Vol. of Fill = 71590 yd3
Excess fill required = 71590 - 55675 = 15915 yd3
COnsidering shrinkage factor for borrow soil = 14 % ,
Vol. of borrow excavation = 15915 * (1 +0.14) =18143.1 yd3
