Introduction:
Wembley stadium is a football stadium with splendid architectural view and was built as a state of art facility to house football, atheletic and music show. It has a capacity of 90000 persons.
The shape is in the form of a ball and the roof is retractable roof (i.e it can be moved). The roof can be moved to make the stadium open to air and can be closed during bad weather also. The rood is supported on an arch which is huge in size and volume.
Design Stage Problems:
The basic design problem is the retractable roof and its support system. Since its a football stadium there will be no supports in between the open playgroud. Hence, it will be a large span roof system.
Secondly it has to be deisigned in open and closed conditions for serviceability, strength and safety.
Also the anch shaped supporting system is complicated for construction, fabrication and erection.
Since it is the largest stadium in England and with a unique system of retratable roof the design is challenging.
The basic design concept is based on the arch type truss supporting the roof intermediately from above.
The basic sizing shall be done based on preliminary analysis to arrive at an approximate material bill of quantities. Then a feasibility study needs to be done.
THe cost of design is just 8-10% of the total project cost however, the impact due to desing is more than 90%.
Hence, the decisions in the design stage shall be taken with great thought and experience.
After the planning is done the construction stage analysis is also important as it will be long span project. Hence, the safety of project at various stages of construction is also important.
based on preliminary desing the procument of approx 70% of total quantities can be done at initail statges of design. And remaining 30% can be done as the design progresses.

The design of iconic strutures like the Wemblem stadium has to done in various stages so that the problems faced during construction can be minimised or avoided.
Design decision taking into account the capability of contractor is best solution for smoother construction or erection of huge facilities.
