Question
Four pumps are installed in four corners of a 80ft times 80ft square building pit in order to dewater the pit. A hydrogeologic investigation has resulted in the following parameters: hydraulic conductivity k = 10 ft/day and water table (head) elevation equal to 60 feet (relative to impermeable aquifer base) at "reference" location 100 ft away from the center of the building pit to the east. Compute necessary pumping rate in order to keep the head in the center of the pit at 50 ft relative to the base (10 feet lower than at the reference location). You can use Excel spreadsheet placed on UBlearns, but you must check the final solution manually.Explanation / Answer
Answer:-
From the given Data first we have to calculate the volumetric flow rate
By using darcy equation we can calculate it.
q =k (dh/L ) *A
A = 80ftx80ft = 6400 ft2
dh = 60-10 = 50ft
L = 100 ft
k = 10 ft/day
q = 10*(50/100) *6400
q = 320000 ft3 /day
now convert it in to the ft3/sec
1 ft3/day = 1.315740741x10-5 ft3/sec
so q = 3.70 ft3/sec.
Hence the pumping rate is 3.70 ft3 /sec
