Question

Problem Statement A 1000 square feet home with a ceiling 8 feet high, located in Shiprock NM, is to be retrofitted to include a passive solar system, similar to a Trombe Wall. The floor plan for this home is illustrated in Figure 1. The "contracted" design team is considering the addition of a "solar space" on the south-facing side of this home. This plan tries to take advantage of the fact that the Navajo Nation enjoys over 60% more available solar energy than the US average. The goal of this design is to provide enough heating from the sun to reach a comfortable 20oC interior temperature during the months of November through April, the heating season in Shiprock NM. A 3D view of this home, including the proposed "solar space" is shown in Figure 2. The local outdoor temperature data for 2014 is shown in Table 1. The local insolation data is shown in Figure 3. You can access more updated data on the web. Make sure to state all your assumptions.

Explanation / Answer

SOLUTION:

Assuming the height of the room is about 8 ft tall, the total volume of the room is 8 x 300 = 2400 cu.ft.

Amount of energy needed to raise temperature is given by the formula:
    specific heat capacity of substance x mass of substance x temperature difference

1. Specific heat capacity of air is 1.006 kJ/kgC
2. mass of air:
     density of air is 0.036 kg/cu.ft.
     mass = density x volume = 0.037 x 2400 = 88.8KG
3. Temperature differential = 20C-10C = 10C

energy needed = 1.006 x 88.8 x 10 = 893.328 KJ

B. DIMENSION OF SOLAR SPACE:

For residential purpose the dimension of single panel= 65 in*39 in

( Note for 4KW power genration 16 such panel are required.)

C. CALCULATION FOR HEAT LOSS:

Heat Loss = Conduction + infiltration

Heat loss thru the envelope: : Q=U*A*T

A= Area

U= material Value

T= difference i temprature inside and outside

D. YES THIS SOLAR SPACE WILL BE ABLE TO ACHEIVE REQURED TEMPRATURE.
