Question
Topic: You are asked to design a bridge to cross a 100 m wide channel that periodically floods. Since we are in a hydrology class, the main design consideration for us will be the height of the bridge span above the channel that will prevent the bridge from being over-topped by flood waters. You have access to a 50 year flow record and a 50 year rainfall record for the same period. Describe the process you would go through, including: - selection of a return period - developing a design (maximum or peak) flow for this return period - developing a design criterion for the bridge height based on this design flow - Any particular challenges that you are faced with in this task, and how you might overcome them. You can give your answer in a full essay form, or in a list of dot points.Explanation / Answer
To design a bridge across a river one should need certain criteria. Generally some data is required to solve a hydrological problem. Here in this context to design a bridge in hydrological aspect the following are necessary
1. Rainfall record : The rainfall data is recorded using rain guages which are situated around the location area of the bridge site. This rain guages give the detail records in terms of water height in cms collected in guage.
2. Topographic maps : To arrange the rain guages at suitable sites one must know the topgraphy of the surroundings.
here in this case we have 50 years rainfall record as well as 50 years flow record
Bridge investegations
As we already have the hydrological information now we need to concentrate on
Thus using the previous data if rainfall and flood flow the design of a bridge across a rive was done. Initally estimate the flood flow rate and the retune period using unit hydrograph methods. Then based on the topographical conditions and the peak flow rate in the dam the design was done. such that it should be safe against all allowable stress indused in the structure.
