Question

2. (30 points) Table 1 provides you with information on the roadway widths and existing and proposed elevations for a planned highway. Develop a mass diagram for the project and determine the amount of material that either needs to be imported or off-hauled. Assume shrinkage factor of 0.92 (8% shrinkage). Plot the mass diagram by hand and answer the following questions. Assume a rectangular cross-section for the roads. On your mass diagram table, include a row that indicates the formula/ method used to arrive at the values of each column, like I have done in the provided table.

a) How many haul segment can you identify on your mass haul diagram (without using balance lines)?

b) For each haul segment, provide the quantity of material to move.

c) For each haul segment, provide the maximum haul distance and the average haul distance.

d) For each haul segment, provide the maximum haul distance and the average haul distance.

e) For each haul segment, provide the average haul grade. (For this, you need to plot the existing elevation profile of the project along the stations and use that to obtain difference in elevations for each segment.)

f) For each haul segment, select an appropriate equipment, based on average haul distance. (HINT: Table found somewhere in Chapter 23 of CAT29)

g) If it was determined that the upper 18 inches of the earth at the existing project site described in question 2 contained organic matter and could only be used for topsoil, how would this effect your quantities? Without calculating, show if your quantities would increase or decrease in the plot above (use a dashed line for the mass diagram considering topsoil quantities. Approximately how much topsoil would have to be off-hauled or stored at the site for later use (like plating the slopes for vegetation)?

Explanation / Answer

Given below the calculation table of cut, fill and mass diagram ordinates

Formula used -

Area of cut or fill = (proposed grade - existing grade ) x width of highway

Volume of cut b/w station 1 & 2 = (distance b/w station1-2 x (cut at station 1 + cut at station 2)) / 54 yd3

Volume of fill b/w station 1 & 2 = (distance b/w station1-2 x (fill at station 1 + fill at station 2)) / 54 yd3

Adjuste fill = Volume of fill x ( 1 + .08), where .08 is shrinkage percentage

Mass diagram ordinate = total cut b/w 1 & 2 - adjusted fill

The mass diagram ordinates are added in cumulative.
