Question
A nurse is caring for a 35-year-old man in an outpatient clinic. The patient has been diagnosed with both hypertension and hyperlipidemia. He is currently taking medications for both. Today he is seen in the clinic for a patient education meeting. His blood pressure today is 150/100. The patient was given his laboratory results on his last visit and asks the nurse today to explain the importance of the following results: Total Chol 250 HDL. 50 LDL 130 Triglycerides 250 Using the Third National Report of the National Cholesterol Education Report, analyze the above levels and explain the importance of each to the patient. What history should the nurse obtain to determine the patient's risk factors for elevated lipids? Using current guidelines for classification of blood pressure, what stage does this patient fit into? What history should the nurse obtain to determine the patient's risk for elevated blood pressure? Analyzing the relationship between high blood pressure and hyperlipidemia, what lifestyle changes will positively impact both conditions?Explanation / Answer
1.The total cholesterol levels of the patient are 250 which is a cler indication of "high blood level; cholesterol"LDL is 30 which is inching towards the risky zone and HDL are just normal and 50 which means without a proper control over the cholesterol levels combined with high blood pressures(150/100) the patient is at higher risk of coronary heart disease or the CHD and he should be advised to be on diet and regular exercise. There are also chances of stroke, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease. as these cholestrol levels would narrow down the arteries and hence reduce the supply of the blood.
2.The history of the patient to be enquired would be if he has a family history of high cholesterol either mother, father or brother, any body had an heart attack before the age of 55.
