Question
in a Mossbauer effect experiment, the change in frequency of a 3.5 x 10^18 Hz electromagnetic wave can be detected if the source and absorber have a relative speed of 0.03 mm/s with respect to each other. Calculate the frequency shift v-vo for motion both toward and away from each other at this speed.I understand that this is a doppler shift however I am not sure how to do this problem or how to set it up.
Explanation / Answer
we have that equation. f'=f0*(1-v/c) for motion toward, f'>f0 so we have f'=f0*(1+v/c) do ?f=f0*v/c=3.5e5(Hz). for motion away, ?f=-f0*v/c=-3.5e5(Hz)
