Question

This question is due in two hours and its the only one i couldnt get, lifesave me please? Also if you give me formulas thats kool just be very clear about what number goes where, im a bit formula challenged sometimes ^_^. Thanks so much for the help.

The highest theoretical efficiency of a gasoline engine, based on the Carnot cycle, is 0.300 or 30.0%.
(a) If this engine expels its gases into the atmosphere, which has a temperature of 3.35 102 K, what is the temperature in the cylinder immediately after combustion (in K)?

(b) If the heat engine absorbs 800 J of energy from the hot reservoir during each cycle, how much work can it perform in each cycle (in J)?.

Explanation / Answer

The highest theoretical efficiency of a gasoline engine, based on the Carnot cycle, is = 0.300 or 30.0%

a)
The temperature of the atmosphere T2 = 335 K

the temperature in the cylinder immediately after combustion canbe calculated as:

The theoritical efficiency of Carnot's enegine is

= 1 - T2/T1

0.3 = 1 - 335/T1

T1 = 478.6 K

b)

The theoritical efficiency of Carnot's enegine is

= W/Q1

W is the work done

Q1 is the heat absorbed from the source = 800 J/cycle

The work done per cycle is

W = 0.3*800 J

W = 240 J
