Question

A fast positively charged particle, which moves from right to left in the plane of the page, enters a region of magnetic field which points directly into the page. The particle will:

A) be deflected out of the plane of the page
B) continue moving in a straight line, but will accelerate
C) continue moving in a straight line, but will decelerate
D) be deflected down, still in the plane of the page
E) be deflected up, still in the plane of the page

I think D is the right answer.....I need answer with well explanation

Explanation / Answer

Positive charge is moving from right to left, that means along negative x axis. Magnetic field is pointed into the page, that means it is along negative z axis. Then force acting on the charged particle is F = q(v x B) = q[v(-i) x B(-k)] = qvB(i x k) = qvB(-j) = -qvB(j) The particle will be deflected down, still in the plane of the page
