Question
During the Apollo lunar explorations of the late 1960s and early 1970s, the main section of the spaceship remained in orbit about the Moon with one astronaut in it while the other two astronauts descended to the surface in the landing module. Assume the mass of this section is 5400kg.
*I got the correct answers for 1 and 2, but I need help with 3 please.
1. If the main section orbited about 54 mi above the lunar surface, determine the gravitational potential energy. The answer is -1.5 x 10^10 J.
2. Determine the total energy. The answer is -7.3x10^9 J.
I just need the answer to the question below. Thanks.
3. Determine the energy needed to "escape" the Moon for the main section of the lunar exploration mission in orbit.
I tried putting in 1.5 x 10^10 J, but this answer was wrong.
Explanation / Answer
It is 7.3e9J. Because if the ship wants the escape the moon, then total energy must be zero. (it is going to be far far away with no speed)
